Adriana, a beautiful young woman from a small town in the countryside surrounding Pistoia, dreams of making it big in the glamorous world of entertainment in Rome. After moving to the city, she starts her career as a hairstylist at a prestigious salon and then manages to secure a job working in fancy dress at a small cinema. Meanwhile, she socializes with young men from the upper middle class, who take her out for parties and other activities with the sole purpose of exploiting her charms. Adriana knows their game but chooses to play along.
In the meantime, she meets an agent named Cianfanna, a modest money-grabber who introduces her to a journalist friend of his so he can write an article on her. Having thus launched her career in advertising, Adriana decides to return home to visit her parents. However, upon returning, she is devastated to learn of the death of her sister. Upon returning to Rome, she takes acting lessons, but during one session she suddenly faints due to pregnancy. She is unsure of the father of her child, although she has been having sex with an increasing number of partners. Despite these less than pleasant encounters, she eventually falls in love with a decent young man named Antonio, who is from a respectable family but still in love with his former girlfriend.
